Welcome to One Good Deed!
For those of you finding us for the first time, One Good Deed is a U.S. based 501c3 (non-profit) organization. We currently have projects in Rwanda which is in east central Africa. Our website is www.onegooddeedkc.org and you can visit it to see the history of our organization and past pictures of our trips and projects.
Our logo was created by Cait Stadler, who is also the president-elect of the organization. Cait is in a Master's program at Texas A&M at the Bush Business School. She has traveled with us to Rwanda three times in the past five years and has served as our photographer on two of those occasions. She is also active in promoting the organization and helping out with our projects in any way needed (which is basically what we all do!)
I am Sherri Brown Geier, the current president and founder of One Good Deed. I am also the author of the blog My Muzungu Journey which is mostly about me, my thoughts, my life....but also has a great deal of my experiences in Rwanda in it (and pictures). You can check it out, too, at www.mymuzungujourney.blogspot.com. My background is as a neonatal intensive care nurse. I work in a level 3 neonatal icu in the Kansas City area, and have been a nurse for 32 years. I, too, am currently in a Master's program for nursing education.
Also on our board of directors is Larry Brown, a local Kansas City businessman; and Ken Rogers, an attorney in the Springfield, MO area. Our medical/nursing advisors include Dr. Prahbu Parimi, Director of Neonatology at the University of Kansas Hospital; Dr. Vishal Pandey, Neonatologist at the University of Kansas Hospital; Nancy Ehrig, a certified nurse midwife and nurse practitioner from New Hampshire; and Sara Dubin, a neonatal nurse practitioner at the University of Kansas Hospital.
Going to school full-time and working full-time is often a challenge, but I will begin posting some of our pictures from past trips along with details of our work and information about our future projects. We welcome contact from any who might be interested in traveling with us. We currently are working with the Rwandan Ministry of Health and the Kigali Health Institute to provide training to birth attendants in neonatal resuscitation. We also have relationships with several of the district hospitals in Rwanda where we teach and share educational materials. A nursing/medical background is not required to go with us on a trip, however the teaching is generally done by nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists or students in those areas. We welcome your questions, your comments and certainly your interest!
And for now.....highlights from our two trips in 2012......
